Student Focus: What does the student need to be able to do in Reading or Writing that is difficult or impossible for him or her to do independently? What are the student’s abilities? What are the student’s specific challenges?

Some Questions to Consider: Reading Can your student read at grade-level? Does he have the staying power to read a short chapter in one sitting? What are his comprehension skills like? How many sight words does he have?

Some Questions to Consider: Writing Can your student “keep up” with the class? How legible is her printing? Does she write complete sentences? How is her spelling? Does she like to write?

CASE STUDY According to the IEP, Sam is a happy yet frustrated grade 7 student. His literacy skills have been assessed below grade level. He struggles to decode and written assignments are difficult for him to complete on time. He is an engaging student with many ideas that he shares verbally but he lacks organizational skills and has difficulty starting his assignments. His time with a CEA is limited.

What is the Goal for Sam? Sam will independently complete written assignments at his grade level.

What is the Objective for Sam? Sam will compose a 3 – 5 paragraph essay following the conventions of grammar, spelling and syntax.
