6. Preparing your position paper Learning objectives: - to research your country’s position on healthcare and medication - to organise your research into a position paper format All of your research on your assigned country and the issue to be discussed in your model UN committee will come together in the form of a position paper. Paragraph 1: A brief statement on why your nation feels the topic is important nationally and globally. Paragraph 2: Addresses country’s actions on a national level. Is this an issue for your country? If so, how has the government addressed the issue? Paragraph 3: Addresses the country’s action on an international level. What conferences did the country participate in to discuss the issue? What resolutions/declarations/treaties has the country signed? Paragraph 4: States the actions that your county would like to see the body recommend in a resolution.

6. Preparing your position paper Learning objectives: - to research your country’s position on healthcare and medication - to organise your research into a position paper format The position paper is written from your assigned country’s point of view. You are representing the government, so it must be formal! So there’s a few do’s and don’ts Don’t Write in the first person “I” – it’s your country’s position. Write information you have learned about the country that is not relevant to the topic. Speak about your country “negatively” and in the view of the other countries. Support actions that are not in your country’s position, even if you agree with the actions personally. Do Use country name or “the government of…” Use statistics, facts and history as they relate to the topic being discussed. Stick with your country’s policy. Even if a country has signed the Convention of the Right of the Child yet uses child soldiers, your country’s official policy might be that they care about the rights of children Be true to your country’s actions on the international level. If your country is not in agreement with a ban on landmines, then the delegate must remain in the position of the country regardless of his/her personal beliefs

6. Preparing your position paper Learning objectives: - to research your country’s position on healthcare and medication - to organise your research into a position paper format Summary questions: Have we met our objectives? What are the three most interesting facts you have learnt? Have your ideas changed since the beginning of the lesson? What more would you like to to know? Is there anything we as global citizens can do to help?
