As the employee was descending a set of exterior concrete stairs at Engineering B building, the employee slipped and fell sustaining a serious foot injury. Investigation Findings The employee was carrying items in both hands and was not holding the handrail. The stair nosing was damaged in the spot where the employee stepped and lost their balance. Facilities was not aware of the broken stair nosing. The employee did not report the incident right away. In 2018 there were 8 injuries across campus from falls downstairs, most involving rushing and not holding handrails. Actions Taken The damaged stair nosing was repaired. Facilities Management has developed an inspection process for University public spaces. The importance of holding handrails is being emphasized through safety moments and other communications.
