Scientific Basis of Psychology

Using the scientific method First there is a theory. Bunnies make people happy. Formulate a testable hypothesis (If…Then statement). IF a person sees a bunny (X) THEN he/she will smile (Y). Operational definition must be established. Select the research method and design the study. Collect the data. Analyze the data. Generate or refine our theory and/or hypothesis. Replication.

Research Methods Experimental. Independent variable (X). To find out if X affects Y. Independent variable (X). Dependent variable (Y). In our study if we did an experiment, what would the IV and DV be (If X affects Y)? Sampling.

Research Methods: Experiment Cont. Experimental and control groups Experimental group receives the IV. Control group does not receive the IV, may receive a placebo. There MUST be random assignment to these groups. Double blind design. Controls experimenter bias. Confounding variables. Now, what is a smile? Operational definition. Make a chart 1-9 and keep track of the following pictures, is it a smile?
