Nutrients Definition: substances found in foods that your body needs in order to grow, have energy, and stay healthy Not receiving enough nutrients from food can lead to malnutrition

6 Nutrients for Health Carbohydrates Proteins Fats (Saturated, Unsaturated, Trans Fats) Vitamins Minerals Water

Making the Right Choice Create a diet low in cholesterol and saturated fat Cholesterol + saturated fat increase risk of heart attack and stroke Calories from fat should be less than 30% of daily calories Ex: 2000cal x .30 = 600 cal

Making the Right Choice Avoid consuming too much sugar Look for “hidden sugars” (corn syrup, sucrose, dextrose). Consume less that 44g of sugar a day
