Additional Example 1A: Matching Situations to Tables Car 1 Car 2 Car 3 Time 1:00 1:05 1:10 1:15 1:20 50 30 55 10 A. Mr. Lee is traveling on the highway, and he pulls over to make a call on his cell phone. Then he gets back onto the highway. Car 3 - Mr. Lee starts to slow down after 1:00. After making his phone call, he gets back onto the highway and resumes his speed of 55 mi/h.

Additional Example 1C: Matching Situations to Tables Car 1 Car 2 Car 3 Time 1:00 1:05 1:10 1:15 1:20 50 30 55 10 C. At 1:00 Mr. Johns estimates that he will arrive at his destination in approximately 20 minutes. Car 1 - Mr. Johns speed begins to decrease to 0 sometime between 1:15 and 1:20.

Time 8:00 8:15 8:30 8:45 9:00 Runner 1 0 5 10 5 0 Runner 2 0 3 5 3 1 Runner 3 0 4 8 10 10 A. Jamie runs a loop of 20 mi at a constant rate. Runner 1—Jamie runs at a constant speed and is 5 miles away from home after 15 minutes. She continues at her current speed and is 10 mi from home after 30 min. 15 min later she is running back home and has only 5 mi to go. After an hour she finally makes it back home.

Runner 2—Matthew runs slower than Jamie. After 15 min he is only 3 miles from home. He gets tired and slows down his pace and only makes it 5 mi away from home after 30 min. He turns around and decides to walk home, walking only 1 mi every 15 min. By 9am he is still 3 mi from home.

Runner 3—Ronni runs at a constant rate, 4 mi away after 15 min, 8 mi away after 30 min, until she makes it to the coffee shop at 8:45, which is 10 mi from her house. She is still at the coffee shop at 9am, which is why she is still 10 mi from home.

Try This: Example 2B Draw graphs of each of the runners’ distances from home. The flatter lines mean that the runners are going a shorter distance in a longer amount of time.

Lesson Quiz Tell which table corresponds to the situation. A tour bus sits at the gas station while the mechanic inspects the tires. It then leaves and make its first stop five miles down the road. The bus then continues on to its destination by getting on the freeway and driving 40 miles.
