Presentation transcript:

Circulatory quiz me – version b Partner b asks a each question, a answers it, then b checks the answer and helps a if they did not know the answer.

1. When you breathe in, which direction does your diaphragm move?

1A. Your diaphragm moves down when you breathe in.

2. Why do we need to breathe in oxygen?

2A. Our cells need oxygen to release energy for the cell (the job of the mitochondrion).

3. What is the name of the tube that allows air into the body from the nose/mouth to the lungs?

3A. The name of the tube from the nose/mouth to the lungs is the trachea.

4. What is the job of the alveoli?

4A. The alveoli are tiny air sacs in the lungs that fill with the air you breathe in. They transfer oxygen to the capillaries (tiny blood vessels around them).

5. What is the function of the lungs?

5A. The lungs allow the body to breathe, taking in air and oxygen when you inhale and pushing out carbon dioxide when you exhale.

6. Why do veins and the heart have valves?

6A. The veins and the heart have valves to allow blood to flow in only one direction, and not to flow backward.

7. Diagrams of the heart show some areas and tubes in blue 7. Diagrams of the heart show some areas and tubes in blue. What does this indicate?

7A. Blue parts of a heart diagram are to show oxygen-poor blood 7A. Blue parts of a heart diagram are to show oxygen-poor blood. No blood is actually blue.

8. What color is oxygen-rich blood 8. What color is oxygen-rich blood? How is it different from oxygen-poor blood?

8A. Oxygen-rich blood is a brighter, lighter shade of red than oxygen- poor blood. All blood is some shade of red.

9. What things are contained in the blood plasma?

9A. Plasma contains proteins, glucose, hormones and gases, dissolved in water.

10. Which kind of blood cells do you have more of in your blood?

10A. Red blood cells are more numerous (more of them) than white blood cells. White blood cells are larger in size than red blood cells.

11. What is the function of the platelets?

11A. Platelets help to form blood clots, so that you do not lose too much blood from a cut. Remember, the PLATE in PLATELET means they are SOLIDS that can block blood from flowing out of a cut.

12. What is blood pressure?

12A. Blood pressure is the pressure exerted by the blood against the blood vessels, like the arteries and veins.

13. How are arteries and veins different?

13A. Arteries carry oxygen-rich blood AWAY from the heart, while veINs carry oxygen-poor blood INto the heart.

14. What are capillaries?

14A. Capillaries are narrow, tiny blood vessels that connect arteries to veins. They are the “turnaround point” for the blood, where it delivers oxygen to cells then begins going back to the heart and lungs for more oxygen.

15. Why does the heart need two pumps?

15A. The heart needs two pumps because one pump sends the blood to the lungs for oxygen, and the second pump sends the oxygen-rich blood to the rest of the body and its cells.
