Part I. Using the attached readings, along with any additional needed resources, you will research the following two religious organizations: 1.) The Church of Body Modification and 2.) Scientology. In paragraph form, summarize each religion, making sure to answer these following questions for each: 1. Is this organization a religion according to the sociological definition? Why or why not? 2. What type of religion is it? (monotheistic/polytheistic/sect/denomination/ church/cult/etc…) If you decided that it is not a religion, what type does it most closely resemble? Why? 3. How would a functionalist understand and discuss this organization? 4. How would a conflict theorist understand and discuss this organization? 5. How would a symbolic interactionist understand and discuss this organization? Part II. Using local and national news resources, locate two articles which portray (two different) currently-operating religious groups in a positive light. Then, locate two articles which portray (two different) currently-operating religious groups in a negative or unflattering light. For each, give a summary of the article, a brief overview of the religion in question, and explain how the article you chose could sway public opinion of the religion over a longer time scale. Provide website citations for each article! Part III: Using the website below, create a chart comparing and contrasting Marx’s and Weber’s views on religion. http://web.grinnell.edu/courses/soc/f01/soc295-02/marx_weber.html
