Coverage – Quick Study READ
What are our coverage goals? Get everyone in the book at least 3 times Have something for everyone Focus on audience Let content drive coverage Emphasize memories Include all important facts
Inclusive Coverage Get each reader in the book at least 3 times in photos – once as a person, two other times as a personality. Traditional portraits (school pics) show the PERSON… Candids and photos of the students “in action,”-- with friends, in classes, on teams, with clubs – show PERSONALITY.
Inclusive Coverage Design pages that have: More photos! Photo strips Folio faces Specialty coverage Photos in informational graphics Creative portrait sections
Try to fit a minimum of 20 photos in each spread. Get More Photos! Talking Point: Have students count the number of pics. Did your book feature 20+ pics/spread last year? Was this a good or a bad thing?
Get Creative! Just GET 20+ per spread! Get More Photos! Even though this spread features a large dominant photo, it doesn’t sacrifice coverage because of the creative use of photos in the font. 25 pics altogether!
Add a photo strip to increase coverage Photo Strips Add coverage to any spread with photo strips at the top or bottom of the page. Photo strips may include room for captions, simple id’s or candids (no caption).
Photo Strips come in all different shapes and sizes As part of its theme development, the top photo strip runs through the entire yearbook. This approach increases reader interest because students don’t need to be connected to the content of the spread to appear in the photo strip.
Design with photo strips and folio faces Folio Faces & Photo Strips Folios should be on every spread and have a consistent look. If you design yours with small photo boxes you ensure more students are covered on every page. Photo strips may include full captions or just quick id’s
Specialty Coverage provides a great place to feature students who are less involved in traditional school activities. Specialty Coverage Specialty coverage doesn’t have to take up an entire spread like the mission trip shown here does; it is also perfect for a creative side- bar built into your portraits section or index.
Cover students as PERSONALITIES, as well as, as PERSONS Specialty Coverage School portraits cover “persons;” candid (action) shots and quotes provide coverage of “personalities.” Talking point: Have students identify which pics are “person” shots and which are “personality” shots.
