Together, We Can Prevent School Violence Keeping Schools Safe Together, We Can Prevent School Violence

Keeping Schools Safe Schools are safe, but are not immune to violence, suicide or threats. People who are at risk of hurting themselves or others often show warning signs before an act of violence takes place. Prior to most incidents of school violence, other people knew about the attacker’s ideas and or plan to attack

See it Know the warning signs. You have the power to intervene! Know where to look Warning signs and threats of school violence can be: *Social media posts *Spoken *Videos *Gestures *Writing/Drawing Stop it “Tattling on” someone is to get them in trouble. “Saying something” gets someone help and keeps people safe. It is important to say something to a school administrator or law enforcement immediately if you observe threats or warning signs.

One warning sign on its own does not necessarily mean a person is planning an act of violence. When many connected or cumulative signs are observed over a period of time, it could mean that the person is heading down a pathway towards violence or self harm.

or posting on social media. WARNING SIGNS OF POTENTIAL SCHOOL VIOLENCE Unsupervised, illegal or easy access to firearms/weapons or bragging about access to these can be a warning sign. Extreme feelings of isolation/social withdrawal due to real or perceived actions of others. Making clear threats of violence: spoken, written, pictures, videos, gestures or posting on social media. Excessive over-reactions or aggressive behavior for seemingly minor reasons. Strong fascination or obsession with firearms/weapons. Gestures of violence, low commitment toward school, and sudden changes in academics or behavior. May be a victim of long-term bullying and may have real or perceived feelings of being picked on by others. Excessive study of firearms, weapons, and mass/school shootings.

Say Something To: What: School administrators Local law enforcement Call 911 in event of emergency What: Name of the individual of concern Describe threats or warning signs observed Include texts, photos, videos, or other communication (if possible) Where the individual can be located (if known) Anonymous reports can also be made to school principals using the MSBSD TipLine. Access on the MSBSD website or the MSBSD mobile app.

Keeping Schools Safe Educators, students, parents/guardians and the community can work together to prevent violence in schools. Your actions can save lives.
