Overview Freewrite Framing Small Groups Wrap-up

Freewrite What is one thing that you took away from the reading? What is one question that the reading makes you think about? Which mini-essay was your favorite? Why?

Framing Devitt, Bawarshi, & Reiff frame this article within the context of ethnographic research What is ethnographic research? “Ethnographic research is a qualitative method where researchers observe and/or interact with a study’s participants in their real-life environment. Ethnography was popularised by anthropology, but is used across a wide range of social sciences.” - https://www.spotless.co.uk/insights/ethnography-when-and- how/

Framing Research in: composition, rhetoric, and even linguistics ethnographic research seeks to ask questions about language practices, and how they (un)intentionally convey knowledge and meaning held by individuals and communities Devitt, Bawarshi, & Reiff claim that “genre analysis has been responsive to such questions and links patterns of language use to patterns of social behavior.” (542)

Small Groups The genres being analyzed The community being analyzed Main arguments and focus of the piece What the genres can tell us about the community being analyzed How does the issue presented in the piece connect with your community and your questions about it? Does it? How do we see lived experience being impacted by language?

Wrap-up Today we: Used Devitt, Bawarshi, & Reiff to look at the ways that language impacts lived experience, and in doing so think about how genres help shape the communities that use them Using this conversation then to reaffirm the work that you all are doing on assignment #2 Next time: Reading: none Assignment #2 due Begin Unit 3: Argument
