Journeys Reading Program Harcourt/Houghton Mifflin Every Reader Empowered. Inspired. Confident.

Journeys Reading Program Research-based, systematic instruction Consistent curriculum grades K through 6 Focuses on 5 Big Ideas in Reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension (National Reading Panel, 2000) Cohesive program also includes reading, writing, word study, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and handwriting

Journeys Reading Program Balanced Literacy Approach: gradual release of responsibility to include whole group(modeling), small group(guided practice), and independent reading and writing Technology for 21st century instruction

Reading and Writing Program organization and components are same beginning in K and continues through 6th Spiraling curriculum throughout all grades Cohesive instruction in strategy and skills for whole group and small group instruction Integrates technology and digital resources Includes formal and informal assessment Aligned to Common Core Standards Every writing lesson focuses on both the form and traits of writing

Phonemic Awareness and Phonics Explicit instruction Phonemic awareness taught through the use of oral language, songs, rhymes Based on principles of language and concepts of print Differentiated to meet students’ needs Integrated with spelling and writing Strategic and intensive intervention as needed

Fluency Incorporates instruction to target the following areas: Accuracy in word recognition Expression and intonation Natural phrasing Pausing and attending to punctuation Reading rate and stress Retelling

Paired Selections Fiction and Nonfiction pairs aligned to Common Core Standards in K – 6 Easy integration of Social Studies and Science Common Core Standards along with Literacy Standards Includes multicultural selections so students can develop an understanding and appreciation of diversity

Technology Interactive and integrated with each lesson Scaffolds instruction Extends learning opportunities for application and practice Online resources available to access from home

JOURNEYS LEVELED READERS Irene Fountas designed Journeys lesson plans and precisely leveled the texts for students. • Leveled Readers include a variety of informational and literary texts. • Leveled Reader Teacher Guides show teachers what makes each level of text complex or challenging to help them meet students’ needs. • A running record form for each title allows teachers to monitor students’ reading behaviors and track their growth.

ONE “AHA” MOMENT CAN MAKE A DAY. Struggling readers present a special challenge of needing to see immediate success while developing reading skills rapidly. When a carefully planned lesson meets success, and a student’s face lights up, that is why you do what you do. Journeys intervention resources are designed to empower teachers to make that impact and build that confidence in students.
