Night Pages 85-115

Night Journal 5 In reflecting on Night, list three specific things that you have learned regarding what kind of person you want to be. How/why did this book help you make this realization? Now, list three specific things you have learned regarding what kind of world you would like to inhabit.

Think – Ink – Pair – Share You will see a quote Write a response in your notebook Anything that you want that relates to the quote: our previous readings, discussions, or video Turn to a partner and discuss what you wrote Share as a class

Humanity “Their fingers on the triggers, they did not deprive themselves of the pleasure. If one of us stopped for a second, a quick shot eliminated the filthy dog” (85).

Faith and Fathers 1 “And in spite of myself, a prayer formed inside me, a prayer to this God in whom I no longer believed.” “Oh God, Master of the Universe, give me the strength never to do what Rabbi Eliahu’s son has done” (91).

Music “I don’t know how long he played. I was overcome by sleep. When I awoke at daybreak, I saw Juliek facing me, hunched over, dead. Next to him lay his violin, trampled, an eerily poignant little corpse” (95).

Faith and Fathers 2 “I gave him what was left of my soup. But my heart was heavy. I was aware that I was doing it grudgingly. Just like Rabbi Eliahu’s son, I had not passed the test” (107).

The Mirror “From the depths of the mirror, a corpse was contemplating me. The look in his eyes as he gazed at me has never left me” (115).

Elie Wiesel’s Nobel Prize Speech Read the speech Elie Wiesel gave when he received the Nobel Prize (pages 117-120) Be sure to take notes like always. Be aware, Night was published in 1958 and this speech was given in 1986. While reading, reflect on of Wiesel’s thoughts, beliefs, and faith. How did Wiesel change during those 30 years? What lines stand out to you? What is the importance of a speech like this? How do Wiesel’s words counter the original title of Night? And the World Was Silent

Night and The Last Days Next block we will be watching a documentary called The Last Days. The film tells the stories of five Hungarian Jews during the Shoah (Hebrew for catastrophe, another term for the Holocaust). It focuses on the horrors of life in the Nazi concentration camps, but also stresses the optimism and desire to survive of the survivors. The film won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Begin the chart that you will be completing during the documentary by filling out the section on Elie Wiesel. Do not lose this chart, you will not get another at the beginning of the documentary!
