Pre- teaching

Why Pre- teach? Research has shown that when a skill related to mathematical procedures ( or literacy skills) are pre-taught, children learn to solve maths problems (or utilize literacy skills) much faster.

What exactly is Pre-teaching? This really does what it says on the box! It is a short lesson on a specific skill taught to a targeted group of children – e.g. equivalent fractions, converting measures, comprehension of specific genre, teaching of unfamiliar vocabulary How it’s happening… PRE- TEACH

How does it fit in with AfL Children are identified for focus groups Children of all abilities provided with a confident and challenging start Teachers are aware of starting points Misconceptions can be addressed

How the children feel “I feel more confident in starting my new maths work.” “We like knowing what’s going to happen next.” “I like the special help.” “I like working in small groups.”

What are the expected outcomes? Increased confidence & self-esteem when coming to a main lesson Increased independence in approaching a task Greater success in personal achievements Ultimately improved assessment results
