Lieutenant Colonel Grant Chambers, CSM The employment of constructive simulation war games during Army’s Combat Officers’ Advanced Course Lieutenant Colonel Grant Chambers, CSM

What do we do at COAC? What is tactics? Who are we training? What skill sets are important for our students? Which of these skills are we using war games to train? How do we use war games to train them? What would we do differently if we could?

The commander’s skills PLAN VISUALISE AND UNDERSTAND REVIEW COMMUNICATE EXECUTE Consider the effects of combat on each of these skills

War games and COAC training objectives Priority is executive skill Secondary is planning Tertiary is communication Finally we use war games to train students capacity to review conduct.

How do we employ them? Deliberate decision games Immediate decision games

How could we employ them differently? Type of interface: constructive vs virtual Duration of immersion: limited by supporting elements Improved AAR tools: recording decision and communication for play back.
