Globalization and the Government

The basis of globalization Globalization is an ongoing process of the change of culture, economy, and society through the access of network and trade. It both benefits and damages the world in various ways. The core of globalization is basically international trade. David Ricardos theory of comparative advantage mentions that to get an efficient economy, you should specialize your main product and trade for others, having less opportunity costs.

Tariffs and Non Tariff Barriers Governments can encourage globalization by eliminating tariffs but similarly governments could also discourage globalization by imposing tariffs. Non tariff barriers impose on condition or requirement by the country such as the type of environment, human rights, etc. Like for example, if a country wants a certain good to be produced in a clean environment, it has to be produced in such environment because that is the requirement from the country who is going to buy the goods.

Decisions Is globalization bad for democracy? Governments face a tough choice between what the voters in a country wants and the what the global economy will allow. Solution Organizations like the WTO and the UN fairly represent all the world's citizens and only make rules that a majority of the worlds population supports.

Political Globalization Political globalization means countries who have an increasing number of international organizations that oversees global policies. Although countries make their own laws and choices, they are held to a certain international principle or standard.

The WTO is an international organization that helps governments from 153 different countries around the world to solve their trade agreements. Government representatives or members from different countries come to meetings and forums to negotiate their tariff rules. The WTO essentially contracts to keep governments trade policies within an agreed limitation. It is based on the policy of economic globalization and it is used widely all across the world.

United Nations Major global international organizations like the UN (United Nations) deals with a massive sum of world issues and hopes to be the world government. It impacts the effects of globalization so much because it involves with international affairs. Almost all the countries around the world are members of the UN and have signed on an agreement where they are set to follow principles given. The goal of the UN is that all people have a voice in the directions their nations take. By doing this, it satisfies the basic human rights.

Global Communities Other people try to influence global society through the NGOs (Non Governmental Organizations) while governments try to manage the economy through organizations like the IMF, WTO, and the World Bank. The NGOs are not controlled by any of the worlds government. Some aim to help companies in different countries to work together. Others try to bring support to the poorer people around the world and try to educate them.

Sovereignty Countries can be affected by the power of the national sovereignty that could be weakened by global economic forces (globalization). Sovereignty is the power of the people of that country and other countries should not to interfere. So, there would be trade offs. You have to sacrifice a bit of your sovereignty to become globalized. Some governments are prepared to give up sovereignty to address the threat of climate change. Sovereignty must be redefined if countries are to cope with globalization.

Conclusion In conclusion, globalization is positive for the world, because it has made the world produce more output and efficient. The government helps globalization by eliminating tariffs. International organizations like the WTO coordinate the worlds trade agreements between countries. Globalization can weaken national sovereignty due to the pressure of global economics forces.
