A rational equation is an equation between rational expressions. For example, and are rational equations. #1 If you have two rational expressions set equal, you can cross multiply to solve. #2 If there is more than one term, sometimes you can combine then cross multiply. #3 If the expressions have the same denominator, just cross it out and solve.

Cross-Multiplying Use when each side has a single rational expression (it’s a proportion) OR if you can make it into a proportion. Examples: #1 #2 #3 #4 Copyright © by Houghton Mifflin Company, Inc. All rights reserved.

Multiply by LCD Use when you are adding or subtracting. Examples: #1 #2 Copyright © by Houghton Mifflin Company, Inc. All rights reserved.

Just “drop” the denominator Use if the denominators are the same for every term. Copyright © by Houghton Mifflin Company, Inc. All rights reserved.
