Fractional Equations Chapter 7 Section 7.4

Objective Students will solve fractional equations

Concept An equation with a variable in the denominator of one or more terms is called a fractional equation. To solve a fractional equation you can multiply both sides of the equation by the LCD. You can also solve a fractional equation as you would solve a proportion when the equation consists of one fraction equal to another.

Concept Remember that the denominator of a fraction can not equal 0. Once you find an answer, put it back into the equation to make sure it does not give you 0 in the denominator. If it does, that number is not a solution to the equation.

Example 3 – 1 = 1 x 4 12

Example 2 – x = 4 3 – x 9

Example 2 - 2 = 1 b2 – b b - 1
