ESSnet on Big Data: AIS-data

What is AIS The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is an automatic tracking system used on ships and by vessel traffic services (VTS) for identifying and locating vessels by electronically exchanging data with other nearby ships, AIS base stations, and satellites. An AIS-device is (at sea) obliged for: All ships > 300 GT All passengers ships ESSnet AdminData WP 4 2 2

3 Data Most important variables (class A – reciever): IMO-number (other register-based info can be linked to IMO-number) MMSI-number name and callsign Speed over ground – 0.1-knot (0.19 km/h) resolution from 0 to 102 knots (189 km/h) Positional accuracy: Longitude – to 0.0001 minutes Latitude – to 0.0001 minutes Course over ground – relative to true north to 0.1° Type of ship/cargo Dimensions of ship – to nearest meter Draught of ship – 0.1 meter to 25.5 meter Navigation status – "at anchor", "under way using engine(s)", "not under command", etc. ESSnet AdminData WP 4 3 3

4 Outputs Prototype reference frame of ships in european waters Linking with data from port authorities Prototype reference frame of ships in european waters Traffic analyses Emission calculations ESSnet AdminData WP 4 4 4

5 Challences Data collection: using dataset at national level (no/low costs) using one dataset at European level (high costs) Data requirements: to process and store the data in such a way that they can be used for consistent multiple outputs, like the ones mentioned on previous slide ESSnet AdminData WP 4 5 5

6 Strongest point AIS Generic dataset at European level ESSnet AdminData WP 4 6 6
