Central Nervous System Sends mssgs between brain and muscles/ glands Central Nervous System

Peripheral Nervous System Transmits messages between central nervous system and the whole body. 2 Main Divisions: Autonomic Nervous System Somatic Nervous System

Somatic Nervous System Transmits sensory messages from voluntary muscles & sense organs to CNS. Activated by touch, pain, changes in temperature, and changes in body position. Experience Hot & Cold, Pain & Pressure Maintain posture and balance when you move positions. (controlled reaction)

Autonomic Nervous System Occurring involuntarily Heartbeat, breathing, digestion, and blood pressure. Unconscious, but essential to keeping us alive. Important when experiencing stress 2 Divisions: sympathetic and the parasympathetic.

Sympathetic “Fight or Flight” = Stress http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTz- DazShYw Increase: BP, heart rate, breathing, muscle contraction. Ready for action

Parasympathetic “Rest and Digest” = Peace Recovery Period System back to normal
