OCEANS

What you will learn Describe the composition, location, and subsurface topography of Earth’s oceans. (Describe what oceans are made of, and what the ocean floor looks like).

I. Exploring the Ocean Floor Sonar- A. major device used in mapping the ocean floor. B. Uses sound waves to calculate the distance to an object.

II. Ocean Floor Shallow Water Continental shelf- gently sloping shallow area of the ocean floor extends outward from edge of continent. Continental slope- steep slope beyond the edge of the continental shelf.

1. Trench- dark canyon so deep you cannot see the bottom. B. Open Ocean 1. abyssal plain- a. broad area covered with thick layers of mud and silt. b. smooth, flat region of ocean floor 2. mid-ocean ridge- range of mountains that wind through the oceans. C. Deepest Depths- 1. Trench- dark canyon so deep you cannot see the bottom.

Ocean Topography

Ocean Topography Quiz

III. Ocean Zones Intertidal Zone- extends from the highest high tide to the point exposed by the lowest low tide line. Neritic Zone- extends from the low-tide line out to the edge of the continental shelf. C. Open-ocean zone- Beyond the edge of the continental shelf. Includes the deepest darkest part of the ocean.

Ocean Zones

1. Surface Zone- Area at the top of the ocean. 2 1. Surface Zone- Area at the top of the ocean. 2. Transition Zone- Area between the surface zone and the deep zone. 3. Deep Zone- Area deep inside the ocean.
