Office of International Affairs Recruitment and research Collaborative Opportunity Harbin University of Technology On May 2, 2012 Missouri S&T hosted a 5-member delegation from Harbin University of Technology (HIT), China. The HIT representatives were led by the university president, Dr. Shuguo Wang. The purpose of the visit was to promote research and recruitment opportunities. Background Missouri S&T and HIT signed a Memorandum of Understanding in June 2011. This linkage document was followed by an Articulation Agreement in December 2011. This agreement outlines a transfer credit program for HIT undergraduate students. In fall semester 2012 we are anticipating the enrollment of HIT undergraduates who have completed two years of HIT coursework and who will complete S&T degree programs. -HIT was founded in 1920 and is a large nationally renowned multi-disciplinary university with science, engineering and research as its core. Their aeronautics program is unparalleled in any other Chinese university. HIT is very focused on the development and implementation of international relationships. We are confident that our cooperative relationship will be mutually beneficial.

Office of International Affairs Faculty Exchange Partners University of the Western Cape The University of the Western Cape is a historically disadvantaged institution, and in 1986 the University of Missouri system President selected UWC as a partner institution.  Faculty are invited to submit proposals for the exchange opportunities on or before July 15th of each year. More than 365 exchanges UM-wide have taken place since 1986. Department chairs Greg Gelles and Lance Haynes are leading a study abroad initiative at UWC this summer. Dr. Ron Bieniek completed an exchange earlier this year. Intensive English Program: Ms. Roberta Morgan, Program Director of the Applied Language Institute, and staff advisor for International Student Club and the Saudi Student Association received the Student Affairs Award for “Meritorious Service to Student Organizations.”

Office of International Affairs Sponsored Student Program: Missouri S&T currently has 282 sponsored international students as of May 2, 2012; this compares to 212 in 2010 and 267 in 2011. Dr. Worsey will be teaching an explosives course in Botswana May 7-16. Staff traveled to Saudi Arabia to visit Saudi Aramco and attend the IECHE recruitment fair in Riyadh; there was a tremendous amount of student interest.  Study Abroad: Missouri S&T has been selected as a host university for Brazil’s Science Without Borders program.  This is a scholarship program for undergraduate students to study in STEM fields.  Two students have been nominated to attend the Applied Language Institute for the summer semester.   One additional student is in the process of applying to attend as non-degree seeking undergraduate student for one year beginning in fall semester 2012.

Office of Sponsored Programs FY12 activities through the end of April and a year-over-year comparison are as follows: Proposals awarded in total dollars: $20M (down 43.8%) Number of proposals awarded and amendments: 230 (down 5%) Proposals submitted in total dollars: $137.7M (up 22%) Number of proposals submitted: 427 (up 3.9%) Research expenditures: $34.5M (down 8.3%) F&A recovered: $5.3M (down 8.9%) Number of active awards: 564 (down 4.2%)

Global Learning Distance & Continuing Education: A total of fifteen different academic summer camps with 22 separate sessions will be held on the Missouri S&T campus between June 3 and July 31st, 2012.    Registration continues to be strong with several camps at capacity. Waiting lists are now being maintained for students still wanting to enroll.

Global Learning Engineering Education Center: The Engineering Education Center is relocating from its historical location on the UMSL campus to another UMSL facility on the I-270 corridor near Manchester Road. The move should be completed before the start of FS 2012 and will enable S&T to import over 20 online courses from St. Louis to the Rolla campus. These courses are taught by adjunct faculty approved by the academic departments.
