The basics ESSnet on SDMX prepared in 2008/2009 The idea: SDMX and its implementation should be further promoted. The action is largely financed by Eurostat and has a duration of 18 months. The main contents of the terms of reference: Implementation of SDMX at international and national level The further development of the SDMX standards used for data and metadata

The basics The further development of the SDMX Content-oriented Guidelines The further development of the SDMX IT architecture and IT tools The increase of SDMX capacity and knowledge Attention: results have to be broadly reusable within the ESS; domain managers and all groups deemed necessary have to be involved or informed.

The preparation Multi-beneficiary Grant Agreement End of 2008: Technical specifications of the Action made available; Maximum total budget available by the Comission: EUR 500.000; Contribution required: 20%; Invitations were made to 30 countries; 4th quarter 2008: some countries manifested interest in participate and started working on the proposal; 2nd quarter 2009: final proposal submitted to Eurostat.

The work packages details WP1 – Management of the Action (PT) Work: Monitor the work in the different WP’s, the coordination between WP’s and the quality of the deliverables; Identify problems and make proposals to overcome them; Produce progress reports; Organize coordination meetings; Meetings: Kick-off meeting – 16/10/2009 - Eurostat and partner countries: Start the project, make a project review, establish the project governance, define roles and responsibilities, clarify the expectations of all parties; 2 intermediate coordination meetings – 04/2010 and 10/2010 Eurostat and partner countries Review of the work plan, schedule and results achived;

The work packages details The further development of the SDMX Content-oriented Guidelines WP2 – MCV Ontology (PT) Create an ontology of statistical metadata based on the Metadata Common Vocabulary.

The work packages details The further development of the SDMX IT architecture and IT tools WP3 – SDMX Data Explorer (PT, IT, ES) Develop an integrated environment to explore SDMX data (conversion, html and chart visualization, schema validation) and a generic SDMX class library. WP4 – Generalized SDMX Framework (IT, PT, SK) Expand and enrich the existing Generalized SDMX Framework, by adding and integrating other important functions; WP6 – SDMX data manager (LV) Build a more user-friendly set of tools, using existing tools and developing new ones, to facilitate the implementation of SDMX; WP7 – PC-Axis with SDMX-ML (SE, LV, IT) Develop a software tool able to convert between PC-Axis files format and SDMX-ML format. WP8 – SDMX in Survey Design and Data Collection (SK, PT) Create a pilot application to test the SDMX use in preparing survey documentation, e-questionnaire design and data collection.
