Planning Your Time Effectively Year 11 Revision Session

Aims of the Session By the end you should… Understand why planning your time is so important Know the benefits of taking breaks during revision time Be able to access a number of exemplar revision timetables

Revision Plan Tips Planning is extremely important and should be one of the first things you do Write down all the subjects you have to revise. Plan to spend most time on those subjects which need to be improved – either because you need a better grade or because you find them tough In one evening you might fit in two or three subjects If it isn’t a school day you might make time for three or four subjects - remember for holidays and weekends that most people find their mind is freshest in the morning Never work for more than 40 minutes without a short break Give yourself a small reward for meeting your targets You will need to change/update your timetable from week to week as your situation changes and as you approach each exam Include leisure/activity time to take exercise and clear your mind

Revision Plan Tips When compiling a schedule try to be as realistic as possible. Do not try to overburden your day with a plan that you have no real chance of completing Break down major revision subjects into smaller parts, this can help you make your studying more precise. Do not leave your most difficult or hardest subjects till the end of the day. Instead try to get these out of the way early on. After completing a revision period cross it off from your timetable. This will help to instill a sense of accomplishment. Consider using different colored pens to highlight specific classes or rank subjects according to importance. Try not to spend the whole day revising one subject.

Example One Doesn’t include weekends Lack of specific info on topics covered Not all subjects are covered Working for too long

Example Two Time frame is very specific Any break time? Little room for change

My Revision Timetable

Your Revision Plan Individual – it must be suited to your needs. Make sure you put the exams on the timetable so you know when they are. Work out when you ‘study best’, for instance some people are able to concentrate better in the morning. Identify the time frames eg. When you will revise. Give yourself time off – put this on your plan. Cross the session off once you have done it. Revise what you can’t remember!

Use of Images How many items can you remember from slide one as you walked in the room? Can you use images to help you revise? A poster of key topics on your wall at home may help!

Aims of the Session You should now… Understand why planning your time is so important Know the benefits of taking breaks during revision time Be able to access a number of exemplar revision timetables
