What is copyright? Copyright is a legal concept, which is enforced by most governments. This gives the original creator of a piece of work the exclusive rights to it. This is normally for a limited period of time. All this is done with the intention of intercultural wealth so that the creator of the work can be compensated for the work they have done and for them to be able to financially support themselves. Copyright is generally the ‘right to copy’ but once again also gives the creator of the work credit for what they have done. Copyright also stops other people from the taking the creators work and changing it into different forms, passing it off as there own work and financially benefiting from it.

Copyright facts… Copyright protection is automatic as soon as there is a record in any form of what has been created. However, steps can be taken by the creator of a work to provide evidence that he or she had the work at a particular time. For example, a copy could be deposited with a bank or solicitor. Instead a creator could send themselves a copy by special delivery as this has a stamp on with the clear date, leaving it unharmed and unopened.

How are my images effected by copyright? My images are effected by copyright because the Academy will have copyright on the images I used for all three of my designs. Meaning if I did not have permission of the Academy to use the pictures and they later found out I had used them this could lead into me getting a fine.

How to make something copyright free… To make something copyright free you need to out it into the public domain or you can use a open licence like Linux has. Linux is a computer operating system which was formed under the model of free and open source software development and distribution.

Copyright Free If something is copyright free there are 3 major ways in which this can be possible; There was no copyright every attached to the work. There was once copyright on the file but it has expired. The owner of the copyright has permanently waived the right to enforce the copyright meaning if someone would like to use it then they don’t have to ask permission.

The Legal Implications The legal implications of using a copyrighted image that you do not have permission to do means the owner of the copyright could take you to court leading to you getting a fine.

What is Plagiarism? Plagiarism is to steal and pass off the work as your own , along with using another persons production without crediting the source. Plagiarism is not always a black and white issue. The boundary between plagiarism and research is often unclear. Learning to recognize the various forms of plagiarism.
