Legal implications of using and editing graphical images By Jamie colclough

Copyright Copyright is a set of rules that protect a piece of work from infringement and so the original owner can control how the thing which is copyrighted can be used. As long as it is a new product and has not already been copyrighted by someone else.

Copyright Implications with graphical images If a specific image is copyrighted by the artist you are not allowed to use it in advertising without the artists permission or unless the image is under a less strict license. Even if you edit the image it is still legally the artists and the artist can take legal action. You can only use the image in advertising if you have the artists consent or you can buy the rights to the image.

When you have agreed permission to use the image you have to give the artist credit on the page so it doesn’t look like you’ve taken full credit for the advert. Also make sure the artist you are asking for permission is in fact the original copyright holder otherwise legal action can still take place.

How it applies to my images

My images are all original images so it violates no copyright laws. If I wanted to copyright my work I would have to register a copyright.
