Safeguarding for Leaders TWMAT LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME 2018-19 Wednesday 12th December Safeguarding for Leaders Miss Aimee Mitchell

Keeping Children Safe in Education 2018 Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is everyone’s responsibility. Everyone who comes into contact with children and their families and carers has a role to play. In order to fulfil this responsibility effectively, all practitioners should make sure their approach is child- centred. This means that they should consider, at all times, what is in the best interests of the child. Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is defined for the purposes of this guidance as: protecting children from maltreatment; preventing impairment of children’s health or development; ensuring that children grow up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care; and taking action to enable all children to have the best outcomes.

Statutory Responsibilities As a leader where would you find out what your statutory responsibilities are for safeguarding? Sources of useful information: DfE Website and guidance Devon Children’s and Families Partnership Website Local Authority – guidance and audit The Key – checklist Union guidance

Culture and Ethos Discuss the following key questions as a group. What are the characteristics of a strong safeguarding culture? How would you know as a leader when this has been achieved? How can you ensure that as a leader your safeguarding policies respond to community issues as they arise? E.g. Child sexual exploitation, county lines.

Scenarios Moving Family Exam Papers Primary Teacher Abuse Peer Abuse There are 5 scenarios, each group will be allocated 2 each and will need to spend 15min max on each one. Plan your response to each scenario using the following headings: Initial thoughts and actions with a timeline Who will you need to contact for advice or for them to action? Reasons why you have responded in this way
