Department of Textile Technology IITD Industry Day Theme 4: {Sustainable Habitat} Development of Cost-effective and Energy-efficient Air Filters for Engine Intake Application Ajay K. Maddineni, Dipayan Das*, Ravi M Damodaran Problem Statement The space available for air intake system in vehicular engines is reducing day-by-day due to evolving engine technology. And to comply with stringent emission norms, the demand for filtration requirements is increasing than it was ever before. An innovative solution for effective air filtration by engine intake air filter system is therefore desired. Results Drop in efficiency Innovative Solution In this work, an engine intake air filter system is developed that consists of a fibrous filter media, which, upon optimal impingement of a viscous liquid, exhibits enhanced filtration performance by inhibiting particle bounce and re-entrainment. Commercial Benefits Longer filter life (1.5 to 2 times) due to enhanced dust holding capacity Higher filtration efficiency (as high as 99 %) due to improved adhesion between fiber & particle Lower pressure drop due to uniform deposition of particles Reduced fuel consumption by 20 litre over filter life time Decreased CO2 emission by 50 kg for a ride of 12000 km per motorcycle 3D virtual fibrous filter media – CFD & Experimentation Chemically-treated filter media Department of Textile Technology IITD Conclusions A pleated air filter element treated with optimal impingement of a viscous liquid was developed for commercial motorcycle application. The developed air filter element was found to be more energy-efficient and cost-effective than the existing one. Air filter prototype References A. K.
