Portrait drawing St. Peter’s Junior High

What is a Portrait? A portrait is a painting, photograph, sculpture, or other artistic representation of a person, in which the face and its expression is important. You will be starting drawing a portrait of a classmate or celebrity today. You have 4 classes to complete this project

Where to start? How to Draw a Basic Face Shape How to Draw Eyes How to Draw Lips How to Draw Noses

Get started! Choose a classmate/celebrity to draw. It is easiest to draw the person from a photograph (with their permission, of course!) You can find a photo on your phones (please save it to your phone) OR you can take one with your phone. You can choose from my collection of celebrity portraits. Portraits MUST have the person looking straight at the camera. Start with the egg shape and your eye and mouth lines. You can borrow one of the four different egg shapes to trace on your paper if you wish. Draw this as lightly as possible- you will be erasing most of it later! Then, take a really good look at the person you are drawing. The more you look, the more accurate the portrait! Follow the order outlined on the next slide to help you.

Draw in this order... Egg shape (draw this lightly!) Lines (also draw lightly!) Eyes Nose Lips Eyebrows Ears (only if you see them) Hair “Others”: Glasses/ Facial Hair/ Tattoos/ Piercing…etc. Fix Face shape (esp. Around the chin) Erase unwanted lines Write the name of your subject on the bottom of the sheet.

Facial Proportions Eyes: - 1 eye width apart ½ eye width from side of face Nose: Bottom matches up with inside corner of eye Mouth: End of mouth matches up with midpoint of eyes. Hair: - Starts halfway up the forehead. DOES NOT sit on top of the egg shape.
