The Alliance for Wisconsin Youth: The Role of Prevention Coalitions in Addressing Substance Use Disorders Elysse Chay, Prevention Manager Public Policy Institute, Community Advocates Mary Raina Haralampopoulos, Prevention Coordinator Bureau of Prevention Treatment and Recovery

Outline Prevention Alliance for Wisconsin Youth Coalitions Alliance for Wisconsin Youth’s Regional Prevention Centers Examples of recommendations, programs, and strategies Questions

Prevention The federal government defines prevention as “…programs for individuals who do not require treatment for substance abuse. Such programs and activities may include education, mentoring, and other activities designed to reduce the risk of substance abuse by individuals.”

Strategic Prevention Framework

Strategic Prevention Plan: Tribes Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council’s Inter-Tribal Prevention Strategic Plan (2012) The Alliance is a program of the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Division of Care and Treatment Services, in the Bureau of Prevention Treatment and Recovery. My other question I forgot to ask was: is there any other thing we want these participants to do or know of other than the information we are providing? Like a call to action for them, or prompting them to look at possible collaboration with their coalitions, or joining one, or even helping to start one if there isn’t one in their community. This does or doesn’t need to be a slide? If it’s a slide, we can think more along the lines of

Prevention: How Different levels for different populations Primary or universal Secondary or selective Tertiary or indicated Handout?

Prevention: How Supporting protective factors while decreasing risk factors Using appropriate products, methods, and channels

Prevention Strategies Alternatives to substance use Education Information dissemination Community-based processes Environmental Problem identification and referral We can mention examples of each: Events like leadership programs, recreational programs, volunteer opportunities, etc. Teaching skills such as goal-setting, problem-solving and using role play scenarios to practice ways to refuse to engage in risky behavior without losing friends Disseminating information about risks and consequences ?? Compliance checks Screening tools

Prevention Resources Data (Department of Health Services) Funding Prevention practices (State Council on Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse, Prevention Committee) Trainings Technical assistance
