ASCCC Curriculum Institute 2011 Plan for the Breakout Review Options for Conducting Honors Courses Discuss Responsibilities for Curriculum Committees Gather issues regarding honors programs today ASCCC Curriculum Institute 2011

Options for Honors Courses Create separate honors courses with separate course numbers, descriptions and CORs Identify some sections of a course as honors; syllabi for those sections must reflect more rigorous expectations for students Student contracts with an individual teacher of a section to perform readings, tasks and assignments at a higher level than other students ASCCC Curriculum Institute 2011

List of 17 Items for Honors ASCCC Curriculum Institute 2011

Honors and Curriculum Committees If honors courses are separate courses, then curriculum committees need to approve them like any other course; who reviews syllabi? If your college establishes an honors program, then programs can have limitations on enrollment which allow for setting criteria for students to participate. What about program review? Need data on students in honors programs, especially demographics of the students and success rates. ASCCC Curriculum Institute 2011

What’s Working? What’s Not? How are honors courses reviewed for consistency and level of rigor? How are faculty trained and assigned to teach honors courses? How are limitations on enrollment applied equitably for students? What are the curriculum committees responsibilities regarding honors courses and programs? What works for faculty, students, the program? ASCCC Curriculum Institute 2011
