4 The Academic Senate for California Community Colleges
Established in 1969 to provide CCC faculty with a collective statewide voice Membership organization – college and district academic senates Legal representative of CCC faculty on academic and professional matters at the statewide level (Title 5 §53206) CCCCO Consultation Council Board of Governors

6 Who Makes Up the Academic Senate?
ALL faculty are members of the academic senate Faculty who teach in career technical education areas and noncredit Faculty who work with students and teach in Counseling Part-time faculty of all stripes and who work at multiple colleges The ASCCC strives to engage with faculty from all sectors of a college with services, support, and professional development

9 What is the 10+1? Commonly known as the "Ten Plus One‚" (as articulated in Title 5 of the Administrative Code of California, Sections 53200) the following define "Academic and Professional matters." 1. Curriculum including establishing prerequisites and places courses within disciplines 2. Degree and certificate requirements 3. Grading policies 4. Educational program development 5. Standards or policies regarding student preparation and success 6. District and college governance structures, as related to faculty roles 7. Faculty roles and involvement in accreditation processes, including self-study and annual reports 8. Policies for faculty professional development activities 9. Processes for program review 10. Processes for institutional planning and budget development 11. Other academic and professional matters as mutually agreed upon between the governing board and the academic senate

10 How the Academic Senate Supports Faculty Professional Development College
Faculty experts under the direction of the ASCCC design each PDC course to provide timely training that participants can complete at their own convenience. The courses all include expected outcomes and assessments to test the participants’ knowledge after completion of the course. 11 How the Academic Senate Supports Faculty: Academic Senate Publications
Rostrum articles and President’s updates Keep local senates informed of current issues and strengthen communication between the Executive Committee of the Academic Senate and local senates

12 Academic Senate Publications
Position papers Reflect the official views or positions of the Academic Senate on Statewide and local issues Offer recommendations and effective practices for the work of faculty in governance and student success.

13 How the Academic Senate Supports Faculty: Technical Assistance
We provide technical assistance to colleges on items ranging from governance, accreditation, curriculum…anything under the purview.

14 Academic Senate Plenary Sessions
The Academic Senate holds two plenary sessions each year in the North and South in fall and spring. Professional development - general and breakout sessions inform attendees about hot topics, to receive new training to bolster the effectiveness of their senate. Resolutions – Establish official ASCCC positions and direct its work. Elections – To elect members of the Executive Committee (spring).

15 Resolutions Establish Official Academic Senate Positions
Academic Senate positions are established by its membership at plenary sessions through the resolutions process Any faculty member may bring forward a resolution to Area meetings and/or plenary session Delegates from each local senate debate and vote on resolutions

16 Resolutions Establish Official Academic Senate Positions
Adopted resolutions are the official collective CCC faculty position statewide. Directs the advocacy of the Academic Senate in its dealings with statewide organizations. Drives the work of the Executive Committee and ASCCC committees/task forces. Inform the work of local senates as they develop local policies and procedures.

17 Academic Senate Institutes and Regional Meetings
Professional development events centered around various topics. Institutes – focus on general areas such as curriculum, faculty leadership, accreditation…and of course CTE and Noncredit! Faculty Leadership Institute, June 14-16, San Diego. Curriculum Institute, July 11-14, Riverside. Summer Part-Time Faculty Leadership Institute, August 2-4, SFO. Regional meetings – free events held around the state on specific topics of a timely nature, such as equity, equivalencies, noncredit, etc.

18 Discipline List Revisions
The Academic Senate is responsible for making recommendations to the BOG on revisions to the state Disciplines List (Ed Code Section ) Minimum qualifications New disciplines Proposals originate from local academic senates, statewide discipline organizations Hearings held at plenary sessions, and recommendations voted on by delegates
