3 Major European Colonizers- Spain **Spanish came primarily looking for gold, glory, and God. However, their primary motivation was gold. The Spanish also developed ecomiendas or plantations that exploited first the natives and later African slaves as labor became a problem as the Indians died or escaped. Spaniards who came to conquer were called Conquistadors, which is Spanish for conquerors Spanish Missionaries wanted to spread Catholicism (God). Many natives were converted by force Many were forced to work on plantations and gold mines.

3 Major European Colonizers-Spain continued Their empire was in: All of South America, except Brazil (Portugal), Central America, and Mexico(included US southwest, California,Arizona,Texas). The Spanish Colonies were funded by the Spanish King or Queen.

3 Major European Colonizers- France In 1608 the first French colony was established in Quebec. Established colonies where Canada is today. The French wanted only Catholics in their colonies and forced the Huguenots to leave. Some went to Louisiana and some migrated to South Carolina. French Roman Catholic Missionaries also converted Native Americans, but unlike the Spanish they did not force them to convert. Conversion was a result of social and economic ties between French explorers and trappers and the natives. French interested mostly in fur-trade Not as organized as the English colonies, but French colonists and English Colonists would later fight a major war for control of North America.
