Writing your body paragraphs embedding and analyzing

Topic Sentences: introduces body paragraphs One way the character of Mr. Linder supports the theme of the need to oppose racism is seen in the way he addresses the Younger family.

Quotes: for every topic find 2-3 quotes This enables you to combine them to create an “Embedded Quote Sentence” “I am sure you people must be aware of some of the incidents which have happened.” (116) “And that’s why I was elected to come here this afternoon and talk to you people.” (117) Notice how throughout the conversation with the Youngers, Linder continually refers to them as “you people” despite the fact that Walter has politely introduced himself and his wife and sister by names. (116-117)

COMMENTARY!! The heart of your paper. This is your analysis of the connection between the theme and your character…. Linder’s language make it clear that he has no interest in getting to know this family and therefore feels no need to learn their names. Furthermore his motive is clear when he warns them stating, “I am sure you people must be aware of some of the incidents which have happened…” (116) His words help to create a barrier between himself and the Youngers as he creates an “us vs. them” mentality; firmly placing this African- American family on the opposing side.

More Concrete detail A.K.A...QUOTES “...our communityis made up of people who’ve worked hard…” (117) “At the moment the overwhelming majority of our people…” (117) Embedded Quote sentence: As Linder continues his speech, he often calls Clybourne Park “our community” and the residents there, “our people” (117).

More Commentary! VERY IMPORTANT!! The use of the collective personal pronoun could not make it more clear that the Youngers are not included in that group, nor are they wanted there. Little by little, Linder reinforces the wall between himself and the Younger family to which he does not deem worthy to live among people like himself.

FINALLY, conclude the paragraph and prove thesis! Although he has come with smiles and acts as if he is an ambassador of a welcoming committee, Linder’s words clearly establish that he is nothing more than a representative of the prevailing discriminatory attitude in his white community.

One way the character of Mr One way the character of Mr. Linder supports the theme of the need to oppose racism is seen in the way he addresses the Younger family. Body Paragraphs should be formatted... like the model provided today. For every quote you provide, you MUST analyze it with commentary (analysis). The quotes are there to SUPPORT your analysis. A Break-down: (Sentence 1) Topic Sentence (Sentence 2) Concrete detail (needs a variety of quotes and embedded quote sentences) (Sentence 3-4) Commentary (analysis) (Sentence 5) Concrete detail (quote and/or embedded quotes) (Sentence 6-7) Commentary (analysis) (Sentence 8) Concluding Sentence

Now you try... Embedded Quote worksheet…. Yesterday you wrote your introduction and thesis… TODAY: start writing your body paragraphs to support your thesis. REMEMBER KEEP TO THE 8 SENTENCE PARAGRAPH FORMAT TO HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR PURPOSE AS A WRITER.
