Napoleon Forges an Empire Napoleon Seizes Power Early Life • Napoleon Bonaparte—born in Corsica, attends military school, joins army Hero of the Hour • In 1795, Napoleon defeats royalist rebels attacking National Convention • Napoleon wins stunning victories in Italy, gaining popularity • News of his defeats in Egypt is suppressed A military genius, Napoleon seizes power in France and makes himself the emperor. In 1795, he led soldiers against the French Royalists who were attacking the National convention. For this he was hailed as savior of the French Republic. He then goes and invades Italy to end the threat from Austrian troops located there, where he wins stunning victories and gains much popularity. By 1799 the unsettled French government had lost the people’s support. In a bold move, Napolean used troops to seize control of the government. He then enjoyed complete control of the government. Other nations feared his power and attacked France again. Napolean led his armies into battle. In 1802, the three nations fighting him agreed to a peace. Napolean went back to solve problems at home. Coup d’État • In November 1799, he carries out coup d’état— seizure of power • Napoleon defeats British, Russians, Austrians who join forces against him
