LISALISA Landsat Image Service Archive –A new project at the GIS Center –Funded by AmericaView –For more information, visit:

What is Landsat? A multispectral imaging satellite –Its takes pictures of the earth –The pictures (scenes) are taken every 16 days –Each scene contains 7 bands, based on color

Bands and Color

Landsat 5 Has been in operation for nearly 30 years (expected duty cycle was 5-7 years) –Launched in 1984 –Since that time, quite an archive has been established

Whats an Image Service? First, what is an image? –A digital picture –In GIS, its a raster layer An image service then… –Is a raster layer that is shared via the web

So its a download? Nope… –Web services are streamed to your computer –You do not download the source file –Its similar to

Our Landsat Archive We have acquired numerous scenes dating back to 1984

LISA project focus The Big Desert of SE Idaho Path 39, Row 30 GIS Center currently has 63 scenes

Image Service Prep

Launching the Service

Why?Why? Provide the research community with data and value-added products to support scientific inquiry The Big Desert is an important area ecologically The GIS Center has over 12 years of research focused on the Big Desert
