Percent of a Number

Today’s Standard: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.RP.A.3 Use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio and percent problems. Examples: simple interest, tax, markups and markdowns, gratuities and commissions, fees, percent increase and decrease, percent error. Your goal is to demonstrate your mastery of this topic by solving at least 75% of percent tax problems correctly on the exit ticket.

Percent means out of 100. To convert a percent to a decimal, create a decimal point on the right if there isn’t already one. Move the decimal point twice to the left. If there are any gaps, fill them in with 0’s.

To find the percent of a number, convert the percent and then multiply it by the other number.

Percents are proportional relationships. Example: a sales tax of 9% means that after every single dollar you spend, you pay an extra 9 cents. The first dollar you spend, you pay 9 cents tax. The second dollar you spend, you also pay 9 cents tax…the 500th dollar you spend, you also pay 9 cents tax. This is a proportional relationship because each dollar is worth the same amount of tax.
