A Bit About Online Teaching and Learning Teaching and learning online are not better or worse than face to face (f2f) teaching and learning Good course planning and good teaching are universal-it doesn't matter if it is f2f or online Whether f2f or online, all course planning should begin with course goals, learning objectives, and clear, specific student outcomes

Looking for Best Practice Each person should have the handout Scavenger Hunt and Quality Matters Rubric short version. After reviewing a demonstration course, we will discuss strengths and weaknesses concerning the home page, syllabus, and use of tools. Be prepared to discuss what you see or do not see!

Demonstration Course Log into the example course-

Scavenger Hunt-Part One Look for the following using your handout for a guide- o Is the course visually appealing and engaging? o Does the home page welcome the student? o Is there instructor information or a link to instructor information? o Do you see the syllabus link or directions on how to get to the syllabus? o Are there directions on how to get started?

Desktop Share Scavenger Hunt Part One Show online course from Canvas Evaluate the course using the scavenger hunt guiding questions and QM Rubric. Write down your comments. We will share our findings in 10 minutes.

Share course and allow 10 minutes for review. Share evaluation and comments and allow minutes for discussion.

Scavenger Hunt-Part Two The Syllabus Look for the following using your handout for a guide- o Is there a course description? o Do you see course outcomes or goals? o Is there a description of how the course is going to be provided-totally online or synchronous requirements? o Does the instructor provide information on their availability as well as contact information? o Does the syllabus contain required textbook or materials information as well as any suggested textbooks or materials? o Do you see an explanation of the grading policy? o Is there a section that provides information on support services and accessibility?

Do you see a variety of assignments or activities such as writing, quizzes, group projects, presentations, or discussion? Do you see a variety of methods providing content such as handouts, weblinks, videos, or podcasts?
