Oya Y. Rieger Cornell University Library May 2004 Metadata Standards for Managing and Discovering Image Collections ~ Trends ~ Rather than focusing on a specific metadata initiative or a metadata category, I would like to focus on trends that are specific to image collections. A session, even a quick overview of standards that apply to images, may fill a full day. What are image collections? What are their key characteristics? Oya Y. Rieger Cornell University Library May 2004

Those of you working with image collections know that they vary widely Those of you working with image collections know that they vary widely. IN means of metadata characteristics Descriptive – DC or VRA Structural metadata – complex relationships, DTD, etc. MOA2 Right management metadata Special collections, finding aids EAD Books and periodicals – text analysis and encoding - TEI Image level vs collection level metadata

Learning Objects & Instructional Metadata Interoperability - Can a learning object created on one computer platform actually be presented on another platform? (SCORM) Metadata - How do you index and catalogue a learning object so that other potential users can actually find them? (IMS, CanCore, ARIADNE) Repositories - How do you store the objects and their metadata so others can find and retrieve them? (MERLOT, CAREO, POOL) Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) aims to foster creation of reusable learning content as "instructional objects" within a common technical framework for computer and Web-based learning. Kodak that they will discontinue manufacture of 35mm slide projectors. It is obvious that the digital revolution is here and our teachers need to follow suit. The company announced it will stop making and selling slide projectors by June 2004.

MERLOT is a free and open resource designed primarily for faculty and students of higher education. Links to online learning materials are collected here along with annotations such as peer reviews and assignments.

The METS schema is a standard for encoding descriptive, administrative, and structural metadata regarding objects within a digital library, expressed using the XML schema language of the World Wide Web Consortium. The standard is maintained in the Network Development and MARC Standards Office of the Library of Congress, and is being developed as an initiative of the Digital Library Federation.
