Frontiers in Services: Designing and Teaching the Undergraduate Course Renée A. Florsheim Loyola Marymount University

Target Publics: Whom Do You Need to Satisfy? oYourself oYour students oYour colleagues oAssessing bodies (university, AACSB)

Unique Nature oRemember that you are not teaching a doctoral seminar – your purpose is completely different.

Caveats oEvery instructor is different oEvery institution is different oEvery course is different oEvery section is different oEvery student is different oTeaching is almost never one-size-fits-all!

Strategic Course Planning oDont fall into the student trap of being seduced by cool tactics. oA course needs goals/objectives oA course needs direction oA course needs shape oA course needs organization oA course needs flexibility

Holistic Course Planning oLook at the pattern of learning over the whole course oat which points do concepts come together? oat which points do you need to reinforce or summarize? oat which points do you need to assess? oat which points do you need to stimulate or lay off?

Do Your Homework oAsk to see the evaluation form(s) oAsk your colleagues or Chair about grading expectations oAsk about the students oAsk to observe a good class

Putting the Course Together oPlan an order that makes sense for you oDont let a textbook dictate your life! oRemember that students are taking other classes; dont be oblivious to their pressures oBe flexible, but dont bend to every request

More Classroom Tips oDevelop scary skills (public speaking, writing) slowly. Offer help. oInvite discussion and comments oWatch criticism; they take it personally! oUsing varied explanations discourages memorization

Finally… Have fun!
