Wood bug experiment BY: Saman and Anthony

Observation Page A Pill bugs habitat is always moist and damp. Pill bugs usually live under fallen leaves, under logs and rocks. They usually reside near water sources like lakes, rivers and anything that can make there environment damp and moist. Pill bugs like to live in slightly acidic environments over neutral places.

Hypothesis Dependent variable : number of bugs go to each food If we put a apple on one side and doughnuts on the other then the pill bugs will go to the apple. Dependent variable : number of bugs go to each food Independent variable : food

Materials Shoe box Ten pill bugs Paper towel Water Saran wrap Doughnuts Apple Soil Beaker

Procedure list 1. Take the box 2. Line box with saran wrap 3. Place wet paper towel on the bottom of box 4. Fill box with two cm of soil 5. Put apple on left side of box and doughnut on right side 6. Put all pill bugs in a beaker 7. Put all pill bugs in middle of box at the same time 8. Observe

Conclusion Our experiment was quite interesting. Our hypothesis was that the pill bugs will go to the apple instead of the doughnuts because apples are natural, and they are more used to it then the doughnuts. Our hypothesis proved right as many of the pill bugs all went to apples during the tests that we made during our experiment. Some experimental errors that we made were; not crushing the doughnut to a size that the pill bugs could eat at the beginning of our experiment, another was that it was hard to get all the pill bugs into the middle after a test so that the variables were equal, some of the pill bugs also tried hiding so we couldn’t see where they were. Further observations that we noticed were that the pill bugs mostly resided in corners or under the paper if they could get under, we also noticed that when we crushed the doughnuts into very little crumbs the pill bugs would not walk on the crumbs, and if they did walk over them for a second, they would turn back. In conclusion our experiment was quite successful and pill bugs prefer apples over doughnuts.
