Frida Kahlo (1907 - 1954) Considered one of Mexico’s greatest artists Famous for self-portraits and depicting pain and emotion in a surrealistic manner She did not consider herself a surrealist, even though she was influenced by the movement and had friends who were part of it Survived polio as a child, and had a limp from the disease Severely injured in a bus accident as a young woman Many of her self-portraits show the physical pain she endured for the rest of her life Married famous Mexican muralist, Diego Rivera They divorced for about a year, then remarried in 1940

The Two Fridas One of her most famous works Symbolizes her emotional pain during her divorce from Rivera It is the Kahlo in traditional Mexican dress (right) that holds a locket with an image of Rivera.
