Look at these paintings… Let’s talk about them…

Painting with dots He painted pictures using Georges Seurat, 1888 Neo-impressionism artist He painted pictures using tiny dots of paint color instead of regular brush strokes and solid areas of color.

What is pointillism The art of Pointillism is a form of painting in which tiny dots of primary-colours are used to generate secondary colours… Georges Seurat, 1888

A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of the Grande Jatte- 1884 His most famous painting About 3 m by 2 m (size of a wall) took him 2 years to complete, Now in the Art Institute in Chicago.

La Parade (1889) Seurat's showing the contrasting dots of paint used in pointillism.

Georges Seurat's The Circus

This was Seurat's first major work and attracted immediate attention from the public. Notice how much softer the colors are in the final canvas. The technique of the very fine pointillism is evident in this and many of his other final works.

Primary colours… Can you remember your primary colours?

Brown? How did he do it? He created green by mixing blue and yellow dots. Brown? RED + BLUE +ORANGE

optical mixing of the colors Not that he’s crazy about DOTS…. Its all about… optical mixing of the colors Not that he’s crazy about DOTS…. keeping the purity of the colors as they come from the tube, and yet still paint and use an abundance of tones to bring life to your painting.

How are the tones created? Think about…how green is created… To make a darker green…. Add more…. BLUE dots to the yellow dots

Why he painted this way? He was… optical mixing of the colors. interested in the way that the colors were put onto the painting or the painting itself. He was mostly concentrating on the science in the picture optical mixing of the colors. would sketch out parts of his artwork so that the models would not have to wait forever while he found the exact color.

Instructions… Each group will be provided some paint in primary colours and some black and white for pointilism. Each group with be given some cotton buds. You will draw a picture with pencil, my SG50. Remember to use the same cotton bud for the same colour.
