Caring for children and young people P3 – posters on abuse and maltreatment

P3 Task Explain the factors that would lead to suspicion of child maltreatment or abuse

Task 1 In order to complete P3 produce an easy to read poster on the possible factors, indicators and theories of abuse that may raise suspicion of child maltreatment and/or abuse and the possible consequences.

Context You have now completed your social work degree and have been offered a regional safeguarding officer position in an academy chain of children centres operating all over the East and West Sussex area. In your first visit to your allocated centres, you decide that posters explaining the various types of abuse available have not been updated for a while.

How would you explain abuse and maltreatment?

Research Using your phones, find a definition for each of the concepts in the previous slide. Abuse: Maltreatment:

What do you think?

Case study: Baby P https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9H5UB-FCqk

Child and young people on the register In the UK, in 2001 (ONS statistics) 57,345 children were on the child protection register in 2015.

Signs of potential harm or abuse HSC practitioners work with vulnerable individuals. Therefore all practitioners have a responsibility to ensure that they do not misuse their position and/or power.

Signs and symptoms of abuse Use pages 50 – 55 textbook 2 to examine the signs of abuse and the possible Indicators.

The consequences of abuse Abuse can cause the individual significant harm and even lead to the death of an individual through injury or self harm. This means when practitioners identify possible signs of abuse, they must be pro active to support the user of service.

Research task Using the Baby P case study: research the definition for the 5 key types of abuse and maltreatments, Signs, symptoms and effects linking back to pies.

Application of PIES Physical: Intellectual: Emotional: Social: They may use language or know about things, you wouldn’t expect them to know for their age: Emotional abuse can have an negative impact on Lucy's development as it is likely that she will have picked up bad communication techniques from her parents such as swearing or having a negative attitude. This will lead to underachievement as she is likely to be in detention and miss out on essential learning.
