A Qualitative Analysis of Marine Mammal Distribution Using GIS Mike Loomis Operational Oceanography Summer 2008

Background Concern over Navy active sonar effects on marine mammals To avoid marine mammals, must know where their preferred habitat is located Understanding what oceanographic parameters are preferred can help determine where marine mammals may concentrate Navy can conduct activities away from these areas Can GIS help us do this?

Method Data acquired during 1-8 August research cruise Only data from 4-7 August used San Nicholas Basin area Oceanographic data from UDAS Marine mammal sighting data from observer Coarse categorization All data imported into ArcGIS Text to Excel Excel to ArcGIS Point data Cokriging

Ship track and marine mammal sightings Legend Whale (other than beaked) Dolphin Beaked whale Ship track with whales

Results 37 total sightings Beaked whales: 1 Dolphins: 16 Other whales: 20 Marine mammals vs. bathymetry Marine mammals vs. flouremetry Marine mammals vs. sea surface temperature (SST)

Sightings with bathymetry Legend Whale (other than beaked) Dolphin Beaked whale Whales and bathymetry

Sightings with flouremetry Legend Whale (other than beaked) Dolphin Beaked whale Flouremetry and whales

Sightings with SST Legend Whale (other than beaked) Dolphin Beaked whale SST with whales

Discussion Whales and dolphins prefer sloping bathymetry 16 of 20 whale sightings all dolphin sightings single beaked whale sighting Dolphins prefer shallower water 12 of 16 sightings either shallower or coincident with whales No apparent preference for flouremetry

Discussion Question: is there an SST front? 17 of 37 sightings within cool band 25 of 29 sightings within 17-19° C range Dolphins, but no whales, found in water colder than 17° C Question: is there an SST front?

SST Front Legend Whale (other than beaked) Dolphin Beaked whale SST with whales

Current and upwelling Legend Whale (other than beaked) Dolphin Beaked whale SST with whales

Conclusion Results from cruise data agree with published studies Some inaccuracies exist Visual sightings only No night sightings Temporal and spatial variation of environment More data would be great! A great starting point for the next study…
