PRESENTATION OF AWARDS Stephen O. Dean, President Fusion Power Associates Fusion Power Associates Annual Meeting and Symposium December 6-7, 2017

DISTINGUISHED CAREER AWARDS Fusion Power Associates Distinguished Career Awards were established in 1987 to recognize individuals who have made distinguished lifelong career contributions to fusion development The 2017 Awards are presented to Steven Cowley Robert L. McCrory Farrokh Najmabadi Stewart Prager

DISTINGUISHED CAREER AWARD In selecting Dr. Cowley, the FPA Board of Directors recognizes his many years of dedication to advancing the prospects for fusion power. The Board especially notes his decades of outstanding career contributions as a scientist and his role as an effective spokesperson, bringing the fusion message to other scientists, to lay audiences, and to government officials worldwide.

DISTINGUISHED CAREER AWARD In selecting Dr. McCrory, the FPA Board of Directors recognizes his many years of dedication to advancing the prospects for fusion power. The Board especially notes his many scientific contributions and the leadership he has provided over many decades to the fields of high power lasers, direct-drive concepts, and high-energy-density physics, as well as to the development of the University of Rochester Laboratory for Laser Energetics as a world-class scientific institution

DISTINGUISHED CAREER AWARD In selecting Dr. Najmabadi, the FPA Board of Directors recognizes his many years of dedication to advancing the prospects for fusion power. The Board especially notes his decades of outstanding career contributions as a scientist and leader of fusion power plant studies that have provided perspective on the requirements for future commercial fusion electrical power plants

DISTINGUISHED CAREER AWARD In selecting Dr. Prager, the FPA Board of Directors recognizes his many years of dedication to advancing the prospects for fusion power. The Board especially notes his decades of outstanding career contributions as a scientist, educator, manager, and advisor on all aspects of plasma physics, fusion energy and fusion policy

LEADERSHIP AWARD Fusion Power Associates Leadership Awards were established in 1980 to recognize individuals who have provided outstanding leadership in accelerating the development of fusion power. 2017 Leadership Awards are presented to Dr. Bernard Bigot, Director General of the ITER Project, and (jointly) to Drs. Valeri Goncharov and Craig Sangster of the University of Rochester.

In selecting Dr. Bigot, the FPA Board of Directors recognizes the outstanding leadership he is providing to ITER, the most challenging project in the history of the world fusion effort . The Board especially recognizes the management and political skills he is bringing to this historic international venture.

In jointly selecting Drs In jointly selecting Drs. Goncharov and Sangster, the FPA Board of Directors recognizes the outstanding leadership they are providing for direct-drive inertial fusion. The Board especially recognizes their pioneering work on the hydro-equivalent implosion campaign on OMEGA and the leadership they are providing to efforts to ensure a close collaboration between experiments and design/theory.

2017 EXCELLENCE IN FUSION ENGINEERING AWARD Fusion Power Associates Excellence in Fusion Engineering Awards, in memory of MIT Professor David J. Rose, were established in 1987 to recognize persons in the relatively early part of their careers who have shown both technical accomplishment and potential to become exceptionally influential leaders in the fusion field.

2016 Excellence in Fusion Engineering Awards are presented to Dr 2016 Excellence in Fusion Engineering Awards are presented to Dr. Chris Holcomb of the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory and assigned to General Atomics and to Dr. Adam Sefkow of the University of Rochester

In selecting Dr. Holcomb, the Fusion Power Associates Board of Directors recognizes the scientific contributions he has made to a range of topics, including diagnostics for plasma current profile measurements and external heating options for controlling tokamak current profiles; and the leadership he is providing to national and international efforts directed toward developing the physics basis for achieving steady-state tokamak operations.

In selecting Dr. Sefkow, the Fusion Power Associates Board of Directors recognizes the many scientific contributions he has made on a range of topics, including magneto-inertial fusion, short-pulse and long-pulse laser-plasma interaction physics and intense charged-particle beam transport; and the leadership he is providing toward establishing predictive capability through his collaborations with experiments at all three of the nation’s flagship high-energy-density facilities.

FPA Special Award FPA Special Awards were established in 1980 to recognize persons who have made special contributions to the cause of fusion. Dale M. Meade is the recipient of the FPA 2017 Special Award

2017 FPA Special Award In selecting Dr. Meade the FPA Board recognizes and expresses its appreciation for the many special services he has been providing to the fusion community , including the establishment and continuation of the popular FIRE web site, that both archives important historical fusion documents and keeps the world fusion community abreast of current developments; and for his support for FPA meetings and other FPA activities.
