1 PRESENTATION OF AWARDS
Stephen O. Dean, President Fusion Power Associates Fusion Power Associates Annual Meeting and Symposium December 13-14, 2016

2 DISTINGUISHED CAREER AWARDS
Fusion Power Associates Distinguished Career Awards were established in 1987 to recognize individuals who have made distinguished lifelong career contributions to fusion development The 2016 Award is presented to Mohamed Abdou

3 DISTINGUISHED CAREER AWARD
In selecting Dr. Abdou, the FPA Board of Directors recognizes his many years of dedication to advancing the prospects for fusion power. The Board especially notes his decades of outstanding career contributions on important issues associated with nuclear technologies for future fusion power plants, for his many contributions to such areas as neutronics, tritium behavior and fusion fuel cycles, and for the leadership he has provided to the world effort to design tritium breeding blankets and to numerous fusion power plant studies.

4 2016 LEADERSHIP AWARD Fusion Power Associates Leadership Awards were established in 1980 to recognize individuals who have provided outstanding leadership in accelerating the development of fusion power. 2016 Leadership Awards are presented to Dr. Joe Kilkenny of Genral Atomics and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and to Dr. Steve Zinkle of the University of Tennessee and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

5 In selecting Dr. Kilkenny, the FPA Board of Directors recognizes the outstanding leadership he has provided to the inertial fusion program for nearly four decades. The Board especially recognizes his many scientific contributions and the managerial leadership he has provided to national and international research efforts on inertial confinement fusion and high energy density physics, leading towards the eventual achievement of a commercial fusion power source.

6 In selecting Dr. Zinkle, the FPA Board of Directors recognizes the outstanding leadership he has provided over many years on important issues associated with materials for future power plants. The Board especially recognizes his many scientific contributions to the physical metallurgy of structural materials and the effects of neutron irradiation on materials, and the managerial leadership he has provided to many fusion community workshops and program reviews.

7 2016 EXCELLENCE IN FUSION ENGINEERING AWARD
Fusion Power Associates Excellence in Fusion Engineering Awards, in memory of MIT Professor David J. Rose, were established in 1987 to recognize persons in the relatively early part of their careers who have shown both technical accomplishment and potential to become exceptionally influential leaders in the fusion field.

8 2016 Excellence in Fusion Engineering Awards are presented to Dr
2016 Excellence in Fusion Engineering Awards are presented to Dr. Stefan Gerhardt of the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory and to Dr. Michael Van Zeeland of General Atomics

9 In selecting Dr. Gerhardt, the Fusion Power Associates Board of Directors recognizes the contributions he has made to understanding plasma disruptions, which will provide major benefit to ITER and other major fusion experiments, and the leadership he is providing to the completion and operation of the NSTX-U experiment at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory.

10 In selecting Dr. Van Zeeland, the Fusion Power Associates Board of Directors recognizes the contributions he has made to understanding energetic particle physics, toroidal Alven eigenmodes and the development of advanced diagnostics for a variety of fusion experiments, and the leadership he is providing to the development of the ITER tangential interferomenter/polarimeter.
