Close Up: History and Mission Non-profit and non-partisan civic education organization founded in 1971. Mission is to inform, inspire, and empower students to become more active citizens. Over 800,000 student and teacher alums. We welcome 16,000 students and teachers to DC each year.

Our Methodology Our Program…… Uses DC as a classroom to study democracy Reflects state learning standards for social studies & history Encourages students to learn from their peers of all backgrounds Teaches key skills and motivates positive attitudes for civic engagement Draws on classic questions of democracy Teaches students how to make informed decisions

Supervision and Security Night monitors at each hotel throughout the night. Program Instructors have 140+ hours of training, certified in CPR/First Aid, undergone criminal background checks, with students at all times when exploring sites. Detailed schedule has all pertinent numbers, addresses, etc. Close Up name tag with emergency hotline number Partnership with Georgetown Medical Center, plus a “Student Needs Assistant” to help with sick students.

Price and What’s Included Total student price is $1755, which includes… Airfare from Houston (excluding baggage fees) Academic materials and instruction Hotel accommodations Three meals per day starting with dinner on Sunday, ending with lunch on Thursday. All in-town DC/Philadelphia transportation 24-hour supervision including night monitors All admission fees Tips/Gratuities Secondary medical coverage and access to Georgetown University Medical Center Close Up souvenir backpack, water bottle, and group photo Travel insurance is optional but STRONGLY encouraged

Important Dates/Deadlines $400 deposit (non-refundable) is due no later than November 27, 2018. ALL deposits are non-refundable and non-transferable when made. Final payment due no later than January 24, 2019 Cancellations after January 24 result in a 100% cancellation penalty. Payments can be made online. Limited financial aid based on financial need (free/reduced lunch) is available. Close Up is a 501(c)(3) organization…donations can be tax- deductible.
