Bell Ringer – Nov 29 *In which location is it summer in the Northern Hemisphere? Why?

EQ – Why does the Moon have a different appearance each night? Moon Phases (PAGE 62) EQ – Why does the Moon have a different appearance each night? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXe0yxzYkjo

1 - Half the moon is always lit by the Sun

2. It takes the moon about 29 days to make one orbit (revolution) around the Earth

3 - As the Moon revolves (orbits) around the Earth, the amount of light we see on the Moon changes (increases or decreases.)

**The amount of light never changes, just the amount of light that we see changes.

New Moon – the side of the moon facing the Earth is totally unlit (between the Earth & Sun)

Full Moon – the side of the moon facing the Earth is totally lit (behind the Earth)

Waxing Moon – the amount of moonlight we see is increasing (right side of Moon) New Waxing Moon Full Moon Moon

Waning Moon - the amount of moonlight we see is decreasing (left side of Moon) Waxing Moon Full Moon Waning Moon

Crescent Moon – less than half of the lighted side of the moon is visible

Gibbous Moon – more than half of the lighted side of the moon is visible

First Quarter – a waxing moon that half the lighted side is visible

Third Quarter – a waning moon that half the lighted side is visible
