1 Moon Phases 1

2 The moon does not give off any light, we see the moon because it reflects off of the sun. Half of the moon is always lighted As the moon orbits the Earth, we see different parts of the lighted area.

3 The revolution of the moon
around the Earth makes the moon look as if it is changing shape in the sky, but the actual size and shape never changes. This is caused by the different angles from which we see the lighted part of the moon's surface.  These are called phases of the moon.

4 The moon passes through 8 major shapes during a cycle that repeats itself every 29.5 days. The phases always follow one another in the same order: 1) New moon 2) Waxing crescent 3) First quarter moon 4) Waxing gibbous 5) Full moon 6) Waning gibbous 7) Third quarter moon 8) Waning crescent The cycle then repeats itself. Watch the video.

5 Waxing- appears to grow
Waning- appears to shrink

6 New- we see no moon Quarter- we see half of the moon Full- we see the entire side of the moon

7 Crescent- we see less than half
Gibbous- we see more than half

8 On the illustration, color the side of the moon that is lighted by the sun.
In the table, draw what we see in the sky and the name of the moon. *shaded = cannot see

9 1. New Moon The lighted side of the moon faces away from the
Earth. This means that the sun, Earth, and moon are almost in a straight line, with the moon in between the Sun and the Earth. The Moon that we see looks very dark. new

10 2. Waxing Crescent Moon This moon can be seen after the new moon,
but before the first quarter moon. A sliver on the right side is lit. waxing crescent

11 3. First Quarter Moon The right half of the moon appears
lighted and the left side of the moon appears dark. first quarter

12 4. Waxing Gibbous Moon This moon can be seen after the first
quarter moon but before the full moon. More than half of the moon can be seen on the right side. waxing gibbous

13 5. Full Moon full The lighted side of the moon faces the Earth. This
means that the Earth, Sun, and Moon are nearly in a straight line, with the Earth in the middle. The moon that we see is very bright from the sunlight reflecting off it. full

14 6. Waning Gibbous Moon This moon can be seen after the full moon
but before the third quarter moon. More than half of the moon can be seen on the left side. waning gibbous

15 7. Third Quarter Moon During the third quarter moon, the left
half of the moon appears lighted, and the right side of the Moon appears dark. third quarter

16 8. Waning Crescent Moon This moon can be seen after the third
quarter moon and before the new moon. A sliver on the left side is lit. waning crescent

17 9. New Moon (again) The cycle will then repeat itself and begin again in the new moon phase. new
